Legal Mission

When: Wednesday, July 10, 2024 08:00 AM-12:00 PM
Where:

Lecture and Consultation: PRISM Lecture Hall, Second Floor

Description:

The Alumni Legal Mission aims to address the lack of a more concrete response towards the most prevalent and urgent gender issue in any institution/community which is Gender Based Violence (GBV) and Violence Against Women (VAW).

Since GBV and VAW cases are usually addressed only at an institutional level, this activity extends the level of intervention provided to the victims by giving them access to legal remedies whether through legal counseling or assistance.

The program/activity is in compliance with the mandate of government agencies under Section 9 of the Magna Carta of Women which states that “agencies of government shall give priority to the defense and protection of women against gender-based offenses and help women attain justice and healing.”

The objective of the program/activity is to promote equitable access to justice which is also  stipulated in Section 17 (8) of the Magna Carta of Women which states that “In cases of violence against women and children, women and children victims and survivors shall be provided with comprehensive health services that include psychosocial, therapeutic, medical, and legal interventions and assistance towards healing, recovery, and empowerment”.

This shall be measured by the number of clients that will be catered during the legal mission.

The impact and relevance of the project lies in the fact that the nature of GBV and VAW cases thrives when victims do not speak up either by choice or due to lack of access to legal intervention. The mission creates a space for victims to understand their rights and have the option to choose justice over the convenience of silence.

Since the state recognizes that economic, political, and sociocultural realities affect women’s current condition, it is safe to presume that tolerating an unsafe environment for women affects their role as nation-builders. Thus, making the University a safe space by extending its capacity to address gender issues is relevant in all aspects of nation building.
