DCHET spearheads successful implementation of hydroponics farming at Sikyop Agriculture Cooperative

Aug 01 2024

The Department of Chemical Engineering and Technology (DCHET) spearheaded the successful implementation of hydroponics farming at Sikyop Agriculture Cooperative on July 26, 2024, marking a milestone in sustainable agriculture and a significant achievement in the second year of the extension project “Organic Farming to Improve Income Security for Brgy. Rogongon’s Farmers.” This initiative aims to empower local communities by fostering sustainable farming practices and enhancing income security for disadvantaged households.

The hydroponics farming system was successfully endorsed by the College of Engineering Extension Coordinators, Engr. Melito S. Oculares and Engr. Karl C. Ondoy. Their endorsement signifies a pivotal moment in the project, showcasing the practicality and efficiency of hydroponics as a viable farming method for the community. This method not only conserves water and space but also enhances crop yield and quality, aligning perfectly with the project’s goals of sustainable and organic farming.

The integration of hydroponics has not only improved agricultural productivity but also fostered a sense of ownership and participation among the community members. The capacity-building programs conducted during the first year of implementation of this project have equipped residents with valuable skills and knowledge, empowering them to take control of their development and secure better livelihoods.

As the project enters its final year, the focus will remain on sustaining these positive outcomes and further assessing the social and economic impacts on Barangay Rogongon’s Farmers. The continued support and collaboration between DCHET and Sikyop Agriculture Cooperative promise a brighter, more sustainable future for the farmers of Barangay Rogongon.

The DCHET’s project stands as a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives and the potential for sustainable agriculture to transform lives, proving that with the right tools and knowledge, even the most disadvantaged communities can achieve significant progress and prosperity.
