Brief History

The College of Arts and Social Sciences was created by virtue of the Mindanao State University System Board of Regent (MSUS BOR) Resolution No. 18, series of 1984 during the 120th Meeting of the MSUS BOR on January 24, 1984.

CASS鈥檚 origins can be traced to the creation of Department of Professional and Technical Education in 1971. The department was renamed in 1974 as Department of General Education which later evolved to the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) on July 1, 1976.

In 1978, the School of Arts and Sciences was re-organized and expanded to three schools namely, (1) School of Sciences and Mathematics, (2) School of Physical Education, and (3) School of Arts and Humanities. The School of Arts and Humanities, which was re-organized to the College of Arts and Social Sciences, started to offer complete baccalaureate degree programs in English, History, Political Science, and Sociology during the academic year of 1978-1979. The departments of English, History, Political Science, and Sociology were created to implement the said baccalaureate degree programs. In 1981, SAH produced its first graduates.

In 1984, SAH after being re-organized to CASS was given authority to offer AB Psychology in June 1985. The AB Psychology program was later changed to BS Psychology with the introduction of stronger foundation in science. The AB Filipino program was first offered in 1987. Since then, CASS has been offering six baccalaureate degree programs.

The first graduate program of the College, MA in Sociology was offered in 1989; the MA in English Language Studies was offered in 1995 while the MA in Filipino was offered in 1999.

To date, CASS is still home to some of the School of Arts and Humanities first graduates in 1981: (1) Faith Ongpoy-Miguel, a graduate of the AB English program is now a faculty member of the Department of English, (2) Saturnina Sexon-Rodil, a graduate of the AB History program is now a faculty member of the Department of English, (3) Rey Luis A. Montesclaros, a graduate of the AB History program is now a faculty member of the Department of History; and (4) Felicidad C. Gadiano, a graduate of the AB Political Science is now a faculty member of the Department of Political Science.
